The innovative design of the Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 is inspired by the legendary Rega Naiad turntable. The Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 also features a customized ceramic disc that is diamond-cut during production for maximum precision and rotational stability. The Rega 24 V synchronous motor is powered by the most advanced external power supply, the P10-PSU. It provides maximum motor vibration reduction, electronic precision speed control and the convenience of electronic speed change. The Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 is designed to extract more information from the carved groove of vinyl than ever before.
A technological breakthrough: lightweight and durable
The Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 is the third Rega turntable to be built with the latest technology — an ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core (developed for the aerospace industry). This material is sandwiched between two layers of HPL (high-pressure laminate). HPL is extremely thin and just as rigid.
This new construction has made the new Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 30% lighter than the original RP10, while maintaining the increased rigidity of the previous model. The super-lightweight body, combined with a ceramic top and phenolic bottom, provides a structurally sound, balanced prefabricated unit.
The patented solution eliminates energy absorption and unwanted resonances that can cause unnatural distortion in music. Also, a heavy mass can transmit more unwanted energy such as motor or bearing noise directly to the rotating disc. The tonearm and cartridge must be able to be read accurately, directly from the stand. Rega's unique dual mount solution makes this possible.
Using mounts instead of a full shell allows for increased thickness in these key areas and, at the same time, further reduces the weight of the base, which directly addresses the issue of mass sinking and unwanted energy transfer. Rega is known for the quality of its bearing systems for tonearms. Especially the precision manufacturing of bearing housings and shafts.
The innovative RB3000 tonearm
In recent years, Rega has developed a new manufacturing process that improves all the characteristics of the Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3, resulting in a micro-precise bearing fit. The RB3000 is the first Rega tonearm to capitalize on these improvements. The entire tonearm structure is designed to have a minimum of mechanical joints, using the toughest materials in all critical areas.
What makes the RB3000 unique is that no glue is used throughout the entire manufacturing process. The lightweight, precision-machined, vertical bearing unit was manufactured to further emphasize the innate design philosophy of the Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 turntable.
The Tonearm RB3000 utilizes an advanced zero-tolerance loaded bearing setup, tuned to less than a thousandth of a millimeter. This ensures frictionless movement and the absence of unwanted sounds. Simply put, frictionless and play-free bearings allow channels to be read in a carved groove with no resonances. The RB3000 also utilizes our latest award winner, the Rega aluminum tubular fine crystal tonearm (each one expertly hand-polished to keep weight to an absolute minimum), which was designed to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced structural tubular design shows the attention to detail and advances in today's advanced CNC technology. It allows new compromises, bringing Rega main bearing design closer than ever to unattainable idealization.
The Planar 10 utilizes a new low-mass central bearing unit. The sub-plate, made from a single piece of aluminum, and the hardened steel spindle run inside a special brass housing with improved mechanical resistance. The entire unit is positioned in the chassis in such a way as to eliminate unwanted potential energy that could be transferred or stored in the base. P10 uses a ceramic bearing plate with a flywheel effect. The plate is made of ceramic oxide powder that is compressed, fired, and diamond-cut to ensure perfect precision and surface evenness. The latest version of the platen has a replaceable design with improved bonding to the sub-platen.
High-tech motor
The Rega Planar 10 APHETA 3 utilizes the latest generation of synchronous, low-vibration 24V motor technology. Uniquely mounted at the highest level of connection, it maintains stronger vibration isolation than any previous model. This new mounting method (bottom mounted) was taken directly from Rega's ultimate turntable, the Naiad. This unique mounting method removes all stresses from the motor housing, keeping the drive pulley completely still. This ensures better stability and speed accuracy of the turntable.
Reduced vibration and a more rigid mounting ensure higher power output from the new EBLT drive belts. Each motor is manually tuned to match the PL10 PSU's own tuned power supply before installation on the turntable to optimize the anti-vibration circuit.
Rega conducted research and development with chemists to use a special new rubber alloy for the drive belts. Using a specialized curing system, the new drive belt offers superior modulus constancy (a constant representing the degree to which a substance has a particular property, especially elasticity).
These new belts are manufactured on tools developed by Rega, high-precision tools (inspired by a collaboration with a manufacturer of high-tech parts for Formula 1 engines) that produce "perfectly round" and "measured" belts, critical for perfect speed stability.
The PL10 PSU offers maximum control of engine stability, convenient electronic speed change, advanced anti-vibration control and user-configurable electronic precision speed control to ensure complete accuracy and control throughout the life of the engine.
Housed in Rega's latest proprietary enclosure, the PL10 PSU is designed to deliver quiet and precise motor drive with a low noise frequency. Speed and control are achieved with a new DSP (digital signal processing) oscillator built on a highly stable crystal. This device will divide the precise square wave signal from the crystal into the exact frequency required to rotate the disk at the selected speed.
The DSP core will also generate a nearly perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration removal and fine speed control are performed on the power supply to tune each motor for optimal performance.
The outer bezel of the previous model has now been removed and a new stylish, removable one-piece cover has been introduced, further reducing the overall weight of the turntable.
